Breathing Life into Art Commission with Medtronic Galway and Atlantic Technological University’s School of Design and Creative Arts

Breathing Life is an art installation by artist Katie Moore. The work commemorates the collaborative effort of the local community and employees of Medtronic in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. When hospitals became overcrowded and more people got ill, Medtronic’s help to increase the number of ventilators was essential to fighting the virus.

The use of Medtronic material and the quantity of materials used are central to the integrity of the work as it reflects the amazing effort of the Medtronic community in the Covid 19 crisis. Breathing Life is made from 2200 small clear spacers; the spacers are a material used in the ventilator. This acknowledgment of staff efforts is central to this work. The 2200 spacers are suspended from the ceiling, they look like they are pouring down and then frozen in time, a standstill.

The ATU-Medtronic partnership is a part of the ATU Radius Project initiated by the School of Design & Creative Arts and led by lecturer Dr Seamus McGuinness. The initiative engages the School’s graduates and students with local community and social organisations in the creation and exhibition of artistic projects and commissions.

Finding CONNECTIONS after the Covid 19 pandemic.

Lots of families around the country missed out on regular connections and contacts with their favourite people – grandparents, parents, friends and neighbours. Many are finding new ways of building back these connections.

So many beautiful entries from Medtronic employees and their children.
